Why I do this work!
I’m Brittney O’Brien, a California parental leave strategist helping expecting parents unlock 6–7 months of paid, job-protected leave — without the confusion or overwhelm. After leaving my full-time job in tech, I turned this work into my full-time focus and purpose 2 years ago!
I didn’t come to this work by accident. I found my way here after navigating my own messy, stressful leave experience — one filled with conflicting information, unclear timelines, and way too much uncertainty at a time when I needed support the most. I made it my mission to make sure other families don’t have to go through that.
Before starting IYL California Parental Leave Consulting, I spent nearly 20 years working in Silicon Valley tech startups, where I learned how to break down complex systems, spot gaps, and turn chaos into clear, actionable plans. Today, I use those skills — along with a deep understanding of California’s SDI, PFL, PDL, CFRA, and employer leave programs — to translate confusing policies into step-by-step guidance that actually makes sense.
Since launching my business in 2024, I’ve supported more than 1,000 expecting parents across California. I live in Sacramento with my husband and our 3-year-old son, Jackson.
I see this work as more than a business — it’s a grassroots mission. The United States is the only developed country without federally mandated paid parental leave, and working parents are left to navigate a broken system on their own. Until that changes, I’m committed to helping families get every dollar, every week, and every protection they’re entitled to — while advocating for long-term change.
It’s important to me that expecting parents have access to support that fits their needs and their budget. I offer a range of options — from self-guided resources to group planning and full 1:1 concierge support — so you can get exactly the help you need, without paying for more than you don’t.
